"What the lion is to
the Cat the Mastiff is to the Dog, the noblest of the family; he stands alone, and all others sink
before him".

Are you ready for a Mastiff?

COST - Mastiff puppies are not cheap.  You can pay from £500 to £1,000 for one Mastiff puppy,   If you see one advertised for much less you should try to find out why.  Find out as much about the history of the dog you are trying to purchase, ask for any documentation and a pedigree, make sure that the seller is not an indiscriminate breeder who is just in it for the money and has no interest in selective breeding to produce quality animals.  You need to know the temperament of the parents and that the dog does not have any genetic health problems, ensure that the dog/s including parents have been well socialised with humans.  I have personal experience of one of our own pups  being taken away and the family did not socialise the dog enough with people, there was a family split and they wanted the dog re-homed.  This turned out to be impossible as the dog would not accept any other people and it had to be put to sleep.  Mastiffs are happiest in the company of people and leaving them alone for long periods is not advisable.

Mastiffs do shed hair and on such a large animal it becomes a routine in cleaning up, these dogs are also messy drinkers and they drool quite a bit, so this is something you HAVE to be able to accept, on your clothes, furniture and walls.  If they are drooling and they shake their head it goes everywhere, this is not the case with pups but as they grow you get to experience this first hand.

Think about how your family will fit in with a Mastiff and visa versa, they are large animals and can easily knock over children without intention, their wagging tails are powerful and can hurt if struck by one.  They knock over ornaments from low shelves and tables and gentlemen you might need to wear a groin box Ouch!

Why do you want a Mastiff - Just to look cool with such a large powerful dog or because it has droopy eyes and a sad face?  If so forget it, go and buy something else.

Mastiffs are Mastiffs and they wont change to suit you, they have been bred to be like the animals they are.  If anyone has to change it has to be you.  These dogs are fantastic animals and most people who have had or have  Mastiffs become devoted to the breed, but remember Mastiffs are not for everyone and everyone is not for Mastiffs.
